4D is one of the few gambling products where the arithmetic is simple enough to do in full. Nothing here is hidden or disputed — the numbers come straight from the prize table every Malaysian operator publishes.
The chance of winning
There are 10,000 possible numbers and a Malaysian draw fills 23 prize positions: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ten Specials and ten Consolations.
For one specific number on one Big bet:
- 1st Prize — 1 in 10,000 (0.01%)
- Top three positions — 3 in 10,000 (0.03%)
- Any prize at all — 23 in 10,000, roughly 1 in 435 (0.23%)
A Small bet covers only the top three, so its chance of any win is 3 in 10,000, about 1 in 3,333.
Put differently: buying the same number on every Malaysian draw day, you would expect to win something about once every 435 draws — roughly once every three years at three draws a week.
What a RM1 bet returns on average
Multiply each payout by how many positions pay it, and divide by 10,000 outcomes.
Big (RM1): (1 × RM2,500) + (1 × RM1,000) + (1 × RM500) + (10 × RM180) + (10 × RM60) = RM6,400 across 10,000 outcomes = RM0.64 per RM1 staked.
Small (RM1): (1 × RM3,500) + (1 × RM2,000) + (1 × RM1,000) = RM6,500 across 10,000 outcomes = RM0.65 per RM1 staked.
So both bets return roughly 64–65 sen on the ringgit over the long run. The remaining 35 sen or so is the operator’s margin — the house edge. It is not a fee that can be avoided by betting differently, and no combination of bet types changes it, because every bet type is priced off the same table.
This is also why Big and Small are so close in value. They feel like different games; mathematically they are the same game with the prize money arranged differently.
Things that do not work
Hot and cold numbers. A drawing machine has no memory. A number that appeared last week is exactly as likely as one that has not appeared in ten years. Past-result frequency charts describe history; they predict nothing.
Due numbers. The belief that a long-absent number is “owed” a win is the gambler’s fallacy. Each draw is independent; there is no mechanism by which past draws influence the next one.
Systems and prediction software. Any product claiming to raise your hit rate is claiming to predict independent random events. If such a method existed it would not be sold for RM50 on a messaging app. See 4D scams and fake results.
Buying more numbers. Ten numbers on one draw multiplies your chance of winning by ten — and multiplies your stake by ten. The expected return per ringgit is unchanged at about 64 sen. Coverage costs exactly what it is worth.
What actually changes your outcome
Only two things: how much you stake, and which bet type you use, which shapes the distribution of your wins rather than their average value.
- Big spreads the same expected value over more, smaller wins.
- Small concentrates it into rarer, larger wins.
- A permutation bet (iBox, mBox) divides one prize into a more frequent, proportionally smaller one — the arithmetic is in the betting types guide.
None of these move the 64-sen figure. They only decide whether you lose steadily or lose in a lumpier pattern.
Reading this honestly
A 0.23% chance per bet is not a reason to avoid 4D if you enjoy it and the stake is money you have decided to spend. It is a reason to disbelieve anyone — including a results website — implying that the right approach improves your chances.
