What the Finance Ministry said
According to Bernama, the ministry said licences and permits currently in force are based on existing approvals dating back to the 1990s. It also said strict conditions have been imposed on licence holders as part of control measures.
The ministry said there had been no proposal or decision from 2020 to 2022 to ban licensed gambling activities nationwide or revoke existing licences. It added that the current government continues to limit licensed gambling activities, maintain regulation, and intensify action against unlicensed and online gambling.
Special draws remain at eight a year
The Finance Ministry statement also addressed the frequency of special draws. Bernama reported that the Pakatan Harapan administration decided in 2020 to reduce special draws from 22 to eight a year, before a later federal administration restored the number to 22.
After the Madani government took office at the end of 2022, the ministry said one of its earliest decisions was to cancel that increase and reduce special draws back to eight a year from January 2023.
